Barracuda Formula S 340 – Omaha Orange
1968 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S 340 Fastback
Ultra Rare Special Order Paint Code 999 – Omaha Orange
In early 1968, a northern California Chrysler / Plymouth dealership wanted something a little different to help increase showroom traffic.
This dealership asked their sales representative Larry Jett if they could get a Road Runner in something other than the factory stock colors. Orange perhaps?
But to Special Order colors that were not available in the consumer catalog, it had to be a Fleet account, so Larry created a fictitious fleet account called Redwood Empire International Harvester and ordered a Road Runner in the brightest Orange Ditzler had to offer, it was called Omaha Orange.
This Road Runner was such a hit, that a few other dealerships in Larry’s territory ordered Omaha Orange cars as well.
Approximately 100 Plymouth’s with Special Order Paint Code 999 were ordered in 1968, the majority of which were Road Runners and a handful of Barracuda’s.
It is uncertain exactly how many 999 Barracudas were ordered, but it is believed to only be in the teens.
According to Larry Jett, Chrysler took notice of the instant popularity of these Orange cars and is believed to be what sparked the start of the High Impact color options in 1969, continuing into the early 1970’s.
This rare Rust-Free California Barracuda received a Concourse Level Rotisserie Restoration, being completed in 2019.
It is All Number Matching. It has a 727 Automatic, and an 8-3/4 with a 3.23 Sure Grip.
This car has only been trailered to car shows. It has 18 “neighborhood” test miles on the odometer since the restoration was completed for checking Transmission operation, Cooling System, and Braking functions. Everything works as it should.
In 2021, at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals “MCACN” Car Show in Chicago, Illinois, this Barracuda received an O.E. Concourse Gold Award Certification. It scored 981 Points out of a possible 1000.
It was featured, and on the cover of November 2020 Mopar Collectors Guide Magazine .
